If You’re Afraid of the Dark
“If You’re Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow”
Written and illustrated by Cooper Edens
If You’re Afraid of the Dark, Remember the Night Rainbow has been around since 1979 and never seems to grow old. All of us struggle with fear, but this little book cops a positive attitude that is wonderful for kids and adults. We often give it as a baby gift to the whole family.
It is a tone poem that poses poetic ‘if’ questions and offers fantastical solutions illustrated with a child’s imagination in an artist’s world of fantasy.
My favorite line (among others) in the poetic masterwork is:
“If you have butterflies in your stomach, ask them into your heart.”
“If you lose the key, throw away the house,” is another line I love.
The house is drawn flying through the air. The front door is a lock with no key.
Dealing with fear through the artistic and poetic imagination of Cooper Edens is a blast.
His book is small enough to carry with you easily and is wonderfully colorful. Don’t miss it.
